The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) – or UN Human Rights – is represented in Timor-Leste by the Human Rights Adviser’s Unit. The Unit was set up in 2013 and is part of the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in Timor-Leste. The Human Rights Adviser’s Unit works closely with State Institutions, like the Government, the Provedoria for Human Rights and the Judiciary, and also with civil society to promote human rights. The Unit shares knowledge on international human rights standards and the UN human rights mechanisms. It supports reinforcing existing capacities how to implement, train, monitor and advocate for human rights. It works with all UN agencies in Timor-Leste to integrate human rights into their programmes and activities to support implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
