Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Why do they matters for Timor-Leste?

ENSURE ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE, RELIABLE, SUSTAINABLE AND MODERN ENERGY FOR ALL.

This goal is about making sure everyone has access to green energy

Why does SDG7 matter to Timor-Leste?

Relevant Target for
Timor-Leste

7.1 by 2030 ensure UNIVERSAL ACCESS to affordable, reliable, and modern energy services

7.2 increase substantially the share of RENEWABLE ENERGY in the global energy mix by 2030

7.3 double the global rate of improvement in ENERGY EFFICIENCY by 2030

7.a By 2030, enhance international cooperation to facilitate access to clean energy research and technology, including renewable energy, energy efficiency and advanced and cleaner fossil-fuel technology, and promote investment in energy infrastructure and clean energy technology

7.b By 2030, expand infrastructure and upgrade technology for supplying modern and sustainable energy services for all in developing countries, in particular least developed countries, small island developing States and landlocked developing countries, in accordance with their respective programmes of support

Timor-Leste has achieved notable progress in terms of electricity access. Currently 85% of the Timorese population has access to electricity. However, electricity production in Timor-Leste is fossil fuel based and the country has an enormous potential of renewable energy. Following the Strategic Development Plan (2011-2030), Timor-Leste has a total of 452 MW renewable energy potential from hydropower, wind, solar and biomass energy. GoTL have target of 50% of overall energy supply to be produced from renewable energy sources and by 2030, 100% access to energy from conventional and/or renewable energy sources. While the electricity connection progress is quite commendable, progress of using renewable energy in energy mix is still far from the target. GoTL also had a target of providing solar home systems to 100,000 households by 2020 and currently around 24,000 households have been supported. More than 90% of the households use open fire, traditional cooking with fuelwood which is causing massive deforestation, increase in respiratory diseases, loss of biodiversity and decline of watersheds.

GoTL needs to emphasize on greening the energy mix from its huge RE potential, promote energy cooking solutions, promotion of other RE technologies and building and appliance energy efficiency programs to achieve the SDG targets by 2030.
