To All UN Staff and Partners of the UN in Timor-Leste,

A Happy, Healthy and Enjoyable 74th United Nations Day to everyone!

UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, the United Nations officially came into being.

At 74 years old, the United Nations continues to strive to make a positive difference in the lives of everyone, everywhere around the world.

This year in Timor-Leste, we were honored to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Popular Consultation in August. It was great to have many former UN staff who served in Timor-Leste visiting the country. It provided a great opportunity to remember the struggle for self determination in the country and to note the many achievements over the past 20 years.

We have recently started the development of new UN Cooperation Framework for the period 2021-2024/5. This aims to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda. It will reaffirm the UN’s commitment of ‘leaving no-one behind’ and to support the Government and people of Timor-Leste to achieve their National Development aspirations.

The celebration of UN Day this year focuses on UN staff and their dependents with a series of interactive events organized in our compound for staff and families to join in and have fun.

Next year (2020) will be the 75th anniversary of the United Nations and will launch a global conversation on the role of global cooperation in building the future we want. United Nations in Timor-Leste will join this global celebration to spark dialogue and action on how we can work with others to build a better future for all.

With very best wishes to all for UN Day.

Mr. Roy Trivedy
UN Resident Coordinator in Timor-Leste
